Top 5 Reasons Why Your JOB Will Never Give You Security

What about having a JOB makes you feel secure? Is it stability in your position? Is it financial? Could it be the kick ass vacation plan and benefits? Does your job give you a feeling of belonging, or maybe you’ve fallen into the trap of a consistent, predictable paycheck. Whatever the reason, I’m here to tell you…your job is far from providing stability. And after a 28-year career in Corporate America, up to Vice President of Sales, I know inside and out the reasons why you’re not really safe in your current position…which is exactly the reason why I ended up resigning and moving on to do what really brings passion and fulfillment to my life. But, enough about me, let’s talk about you! Let’s jump right in to the Top 5 Reasons Why

1.   Retirement NOT Guaranteed

Most of us grew up hearing things like, “go to college, get a stable job that puts food on the table, provides a solid income and has great retirement benefits”, right?

Well, I hate to break it to you, but there is no way to guarantee that your company is going to give you that coveted retirement plan you were hoping for.

I have seen people get let go within months of retirement, only because it saved the company money.

It’s no secret that our retirement security has pretty much gone belly up. You can type a quick google search on the current state of pension plans in the US and discover the utter mess we’re in.

According to USA Today, nearly two-thirds of pension funds are considering dropping guaranteed benefits to new workers within the next five years, and…most U.S. companies no longer offer defined-benefit pensions, which would typically provide guaranteed monthly payments to workers when they retire.

Basically, what we’ve gathered is that the old rules of getting a stable job to build your retirement have been thrown out the window…and, do you have a backup plan?

…or an old, rich, distant relative with nobody to leave their inheritance to?

Gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling inside, doesn’t it?

2.   You Are Replaceable

Okay, okay, you’re definitely NOT replaceable, but the hard truth is, to your employer, you are just another name on the payroll. We have all heard the countless stories of people later in their careers, being let go and replaced by younger, more inexperienced (and cheaper) employees.

AND, not to mention the elephant in the room… we’re living in the era of Artificial Intelligence!

Time Magazine published that Robots could be replacing as many as 2 million more workers in manufacturing alone by 2025, according to a recent paper by economists at MIT and Boston University.

Machines don’t need time off, they don’t get sick or want to take a vacation, they don’t need lunch breaks…hell, they have no feelings!

…So, tell me more about this job your so desperately clinging onto.

This may be a hard pill to swallow, but keep reading… I promise, there is a silver lining to all of this.

3.   Limited Earnings

Let’s get real, there is a cap on what you can earn in most positions. Even if you happen to make a decent salary, the goal is still to put money in the pockets of the owners, not its employees.

We can clearly see the lack of earnings for American workers after Covid hit and unemployment skyrocketed. A little over 40% of workers have made MORE money while unemployed than from their former jobs, according to an article posted on CNBC.

And if you have managed to keep your position throughout the pandemic, let me share another piece of information that may cause you to dig a little deeper into your salary…

Forbes has made mention that “staying employed at the same company for over two years on average is going to make you earn less over your lifetime by about 50% or more.” Between inflation, and minimal raises, you’re getting screwed.

But let me shed some light…the average increase in salary an employee will generally receive for leaving is an increase of anywhere from 10-20%

Holy Smokes Batman!!!

So, what does that mean for you and your life?

Well, if you’re content in the fact that the amount you make now is paying the bills and putting food on the table, great! But, if you’re the type of person who finds security in knowing that you can not only put food on the table, but have enough extra to travel, give back, live the way you want, where you want… then you might want to reconsider that “good enough” JOB you’ve been dragging yourself to day after day.

And for those of you who say, “I make plenty of money to do all of that and more” … kudos to you… but can you also say you absolutely love what you do day in and day out? That you get to use your God given gifts and have financial freedom while you do it?

Now, that’s real security!

4.   Control

So, you’ve been working at your company for quite a while now… making decent money, your 401K is growing, you’ve got your insurance set and can take a nice vacation once a year… but you feel it’s time for a change in scenery.

You want to move. You want to experience the world…

You are pretty much confined to the area/areas your employer says you can go.

What if they have no other locations, what if you can’t work remote? You my friend, are SOL.

So, you’ve got a few options…

  • You can stay put and stuff down your misery.

  • Stay put and share your misery with everyone around you.

  • Try to be content and tell yourself you’re happy enough.

  • Attempt to find another job where you want to live, making the same or better income than you currently make.

  • OR, you can say sayonara to the confines of a JOB once and for all, monetize your passion, and live where you want, doing what you want…Sounds like a sweet deal to me.

5.   Confined and Conformed

Last but most certainly not least, (in fact this may be the #1 reason why so many people unknowingly feel discontent and insecure in their current positions), is none other than the dreaded CONFORMITY!

I’m going to ask you to really open your mind for a minute and hear me out on this…

There is no security in conformity… period.

You cannot live a full life trying to be what someone else wants or expects you to be. You cannot be free and secure within, and you cannot experience all you were made to experience, and feel the immense joy that comes with owning your unique gifts and talents…and where’s the security in that?

Not speaking on financial security, or maintaining and building a structured retirement plan for a moment… how much quality of life can you achieve with somebody telling you how to act, how to be, how to work, how to use your creativity…or not.

Is there any mental security in that?

So, to trade your life for a paycheck that pays the bills, builds somewhat of a retirement, and gives you some sense of authority, you’ll trade away your joy, your time with your family, your uniqueness and your freedom to be YOU. You will live under false security for the one life you have, most likely dealing with some degree of discontent throughout, and at the end of it what will you have gained?

Think about that… What are you trading for this so-called “Security” your JOB is offering?

Well, there they are folks!
